The Transport Division of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office is a group of 10 officers whose duties and responsibilities cover a large area of the Sheriff's Office. The transport Division is responsible for all inmates taken to and from the court system. This includes remaining with the inmates during all court proceedings and providing courtroom security for the court to which they are assigned. This includes Circuit, General Sessions, Juvenile, Chancery and Grand Jury proceedings. In addition, Transport is responsible for all arrests made during court on warrants or any violation of law. Transport also performs the duties of acting court officer for any Judge when needed.
In addition to their court transport duties, the division spends many hours of the day on the road. They are responsible for all in-state transports as a result of warrant activity or court ordered pick-ups and when required, out-of-state extraditions. The division also provides for the transport of inmates to and from the Tennessee Department of Corrections who are required for court in Rutherford County. This also includes the inmates of the Rutherford County Correctional Work Center.
The duties of the transport officers also extend to Jury trials. They are responsible for providing officers to protect and serve the jurors of sequestered juries. These officers remain with the jury during all court proceedings as well as after court at the provided hotel location. This includes nights and weekend coverage. It is the responsibility of the division supervisors to set up all accommodations for the jury including hotel reservations and restaurant locations.
Transport also deals daily with medical appointments for all inmates. This includes doctor's offices, dental visits, surgery, x-rays, emergency room visits, emergency committals and inpatient hospital stays. In addition, safe transports for the general public on emergency committal are provided if needed.
The Transport Division also provides assistance to other divisions, both within and outside of the Sheriff's Office each day. They assist with the service of civil warrants, transport "high-risk" offenders for the Juvenile Detention Center to various locations, transport inmates required to attend court in Smyrna for the the Smyrna General Sessions and provide assistance to the Patrol Division where possible with motorist assists and traffic control.
The Transport Division requires training in many areas. Officers are trained in officer safety, weapons handling and control, ASP baton certification, chemical weapons certification, qualification with a duty weapon and certification in high-risk transport. Each officer is required to pass a physical agility test each year.
Transport, like many divisions within the Sheriff's Office, is required to interact daily with the public and provide assistance when needed. It is an honor and privilege to provide this service to the citizens of Rutherford County.
