Cold Case Detective–Sgt. Dan Goodwin
Sgt. Goodwin started with RCSO’s Patrol Division in August 1992. The next year he became one of the first five School Resource Officers in Tennessee.
In 1995 he transferred to the Detective Division, serving more than seven years in Narcotics and 10 years in CID. Goodwin and Maj. Bill Sharp were named 2002 Officers of the Year for solving the 1984 murder of MTSU student Laura Salmon.
In late 2012, Goodwin graduated Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety’s School of Police Staff and Command, Class #337.
Goodwin is an RCSO firearms instructor and writes articles on firearms and training for national publications.
Goodwin also teaches cold case investigations, search warrant writing, and media relations to law enforcement in-service classes and civilian audiences.
He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Mass Communications from Middle Tennessee State University in 1985, and worked as a newspaper reporter and editor until 1992. Goodwin also taught journalism at MTSU from 1987-93. He is an Air Force Cold War veteran of the SR-71 Blackbird and U-2 Dragonlady spy plane programs.
Goodwin enjoys shooting, hunting, writing and spending time with his friends, his wife and three children.
